Chapter 12: Recognition of Learners from Diverse Backgrounds Including Advantaged and Disadvantaged Sections

(Introduction) Introduction

Cultural diversity means differences. The word diversity is very specific when used in a particular or social context related to people or communities. It means a group of individuals or communities who are different from each other. It means that people differ in many perspectives including social, ethnic, economic and cultural. For example—culture, language, gender, physical appearance (like color, hair etc.), age, lifestyle, social and economic status, family structure, abilities (physical, social, cognitive or physical) and differences in their abilities and fields.
In the perspective of uniformity, the word diversity is an antonym of uniformity. Uniformity means some kind of similarity that characterizes a group of people. In English, the word for uniformity is 'Uniformity'. 'Uni' means one and 'form' means similar form or method. So when all people have some similarity, we say that there is uniformity in that group. When students of a school, graduates, members of the navy or police wear the same kind of dress, we say they are 'Uniform'.
Diversity and uniformity are also a collective concept. When a group of people has similar thoughts, they are called a group. Then the specificities and their philosophy are reflected in education as members of their group. The phenomenon of diversity is an important and fundamental aspect of society, which makes it rich and complex. Social change and structures, social structure, diversity and the identification of its impact are deeply interconnected. Diversity as a social process, caste, religion, gender and region, can change social and diversity. The relationship between social and diversity is very deep and intimate.
Diversity can be seen with its many aspects, each aspect being related to its consequences in the person or society. In the context of diversity, it can be better understood how society separates individuals in different ways and how each person experiences different outcomes.
India is a country with immense diversity and a group of people. India's population is made up of majority ethnic, linguistic, religious, cultural and economic groups. Caste and region, tribal, religion and gender traditions represent a large part of life in India, as they exert their pressure in different ways on the life, behavior and development of the individual. While the Government of India has taken steps to effectively implement laws, it has initiated positive actions for numerous groups of advantaged and disadvantaged sections to specifically address the shortcomings of those groups.
Such a social and cultural context shows that to work with people from different backgrounds and specificities, it is important to understand how one knows about their different characteristics and abilities. Traditionally, education systems follow the pre-existing class system and social hierarchy, which perpetuates social inequalities in the long term.

(Meaning of Diversities) Meaning of Diversities

Diversity means difference, distinction, variation or variety that is completely different or distinct from each other. Generally, in human life, differences between people can be seen on various dimensions such as caste, religion, sect, ethnicity, culture, language and socio-economic status. It is mainly the difference found among people from different backgrounds. In the educational context, differences are observed in children from different backgrounds in terms of a particular ability, which basically makes children different from each other. This means that the demographics of schools are very broad and diverse. They can classify children into groups based on their background, i.e., elite class, middle class and lower class. In India, the social hierarchy reflects social indicators such as caste, religion, gender, place and parents' economic background, and all castes and religions have their own distinct characteristics for the purpose of life in society.
Due to the majority population and diverse groups in India, they can be classified into different groups. These include— 1. Social and cultural groups; 2. Religious groups; 3. Linguistic groups; 4. Economic groups; 5. Gender groups; 6. Physically isolated groups; 7. Caste and tribal groups.
Variation develops between individuals and groups and there are some social and cultural differences between individuals and groups. For example—in a particular region, the people there may have their own language, their own culture, their own customs, their own eating habits and their own style of dress, which are different from the habits of people from other regions.

(Types of Diversities) Types of Diversities

(Linguistic Diversity)1. Linguistic Diversity

Language is a very important means for the life of social groups and their culture. Language helps groups express their social and cultural identity. The concept of linguistic diversity is related to the presence of different languages and the population of their speakers. A language serves to connect members of a social group. Language allows social groups to express differences among themselves. Linguistic diversity exists in India and is spread across the entire country, meaning that different languages are spoken at different places in our country. Since the Vedic period, Sanskrit, Prakrit and various other languages have been spoken in India.
In the present time, many languages like Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Odia, Marathi, Gujarati, Bengali, Punjabi, Assamese, Kashmiri, Urdu, etc. are spoken in various states of our country. In this context, we can say that different groups have different languages. Some groups speak different languages like Sanskrit, Hindi, English, Urdu and follow their own culture and language tradition. People living in different places in India have their own language and customs. For example—Bengal, Punjab, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh have their own distinct dialects. People of all regions speak their own language. Some languages like Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, etc. are spoken in South India, while other languages are spoken in North, East and West India.

(Religious Diversity)2. Religious Diversity

Religion greatly influences the social and cultural dimensions of the life of individuals and groups. Religion is a fundamental part of society and plays a very important role in society. There is a deep relationship between religion and society in India, as religion influences the personality of every Indian. Having faith in or belief in gods and worshiping them, performing rituals, praying, etc., all activities are related to your religion.
Religious diversity is found in India. People of different religions live here. These include Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, Sikhism, Buddhism, Jainism, etc. Each religion has its own beliefs and its own rules and customs, and there is considerable diversity among them. This situation developed and whatever developed in India during the medieval period gave new colors, new consciousness and new social structure to our social and cultural life. Thus, different religions were incorporated into social life.

(Socio-Cultural Diversity)3. Socio-Cultural Diversity

Every society and culture has its own distinct social and cultural significance. Our country has various types of communities and religions, castes and tribes. All these groups have their own culture and social norms. All groups have their own social and cultural value systems. The people here have their own distinct clothes, language, food habits, social customs, lifestyle, etc. Due to their own culture in different regions and languages in India, groups live in regions. This is the social and cultural diversity of India.

(Economic Diversity)4. Economic Diversity

Economic diversity is found among the people of India. There is diversity and difference in the sources of income and the work done by people. The source of income mainly depends on the work they do. Some groups earn their income by doing farming and agricultural work. Some people earn their income by working in government or non-government services. Some people do their own business. Some such people have different sources of income. Due to these different sources of income, some people reach the higher social and economic groups of society, while some remain in lower social classes. Thus, based on economic status, people can be divided into three classes: 1. Upper class, 2. Middle class, and 3. Lower class.

(Caste Diversity)5. Caste Diversity

Caste diversity in society is seen in the form of groups based on their groups. Caste is a system that is deeply entrenched in India. It is often defined as the structure of groups that are given social status at birth. Another definition focuses not only on the place of caste in society but also on the activities and nature of social interaction that a group can and cannot do with another. It is common for caste groups to have some differences or distinctions among those who are their members and those who are members of others. Each caste has its own distinct social and cultural values and habits. They practice the custom of endogamy i.e., marriage occurs only among members of their own caste. They observe restrictions in food, interaction and sitting in places, and many of them follow occupations among members of their own caste.

(Tribe Diversity)6. Tribe Diversity

Tribal groups have their own distinct social, economic and cultural significance. The tribal population in India is very high. According to the 2001 census, the tribal population of India is 8.2% of the total population, which is a total of 84.3 million. Today there are about 500 tribal communities in India, of which 104 tribes are very backward from a socio-economic perspective.
Tribal groups have their own distinct names and languages. They have their own regional traditions, cultural characteristics and customs. All tribal areas of India are rightly known as "tribal areas" or "scheduled areas". Since the days of primitive humans, tribal groups have followed their own lifestyle, social norms and cultures. They live within their regional boundaries and do almost every activity together. Some tribal groups are aboriginal and have their own distinct languages, customs and traditions. They are originally considered the aboriginals of India. Some tribal groups are engaged in activities like hunting, fishing, agriculture, cattle rearing, etc. Tribal groups in some regions are very efficient in preserving their social, economic and cultural life and traditions.

(Gender Diversity)7. Gender Diversity

Gender is a social concept, while a person's sex is a biological status. The different social roles of men and women reflect gender inequality. There are not only biological differences between men and women, but also differences in social environment, culture, religion, occupation, roles, interests, behavior and attitudes. These differences between men and women are considered socially defined roles.
Although women in India are fewer in number than men, their contribution is significantly higher than men. Although discrimination is decreasing in India, it still exists in the country. Today, Indian women have maintained their presence in education, occupying high positions in various fields and in various fields like sports, law and politics. The success of women in all these fields has given them a new identity. As a result, many women are now in high and important positions in public and private sectors. They are walking shoulder to shoulder with men with their participation in all fields, yet gender inequality still exists in society, which reflects the condition of gender discrimination.
